I love to hear the fun creative stories they come up with. We always end up in puddles of giggles. That was why I thought it would be fun to make them some spooky story blocks. Tonight we are going to see who can create the spookiest story with these four blocks.

For younger children, let them tell the story to you. They may not want to roll the blocks but spin them to what image they want. That is fine. They are still being creative. They may go off script sometimes or want to use certain blocks twice. Lou created a story about a Girl Vampire and a Boy Vampire who were in love while I was taking pictures of them. It’s all about allowing them freedom to be creative in their story creation.

For older children, they can be more strict in the rules of using the block images they roll. For them it creates more fun to have to use a certain image that may not quite fit into the normal story. Also you could have them write their story down. We usually use the blocks we have a few times. They will roll them and create the starting scene and once they get to a point where they don’t know where to take their story next they will roll the blocks again for a new idea to add to their original story. Then they have to think about how to get from point a to point b. We keep the original main character and add a secondary character to their story.

There are four different blocks to lead the story direction. The Character block tells which character they should use as the main person of their story. The Setting Block tells where their story should take place. The Emotions Block should set the emotional theme of the story…How is the character feeling? The Prop Block tells them what prop they have to work with. Such as a Witch who is Mad at a Haunted House with a Jack O Lantern. What story can they come up with about this Witch?

How to put them together:

The blocks are pretty easy to make.

I hope you enjoy them!

A lot of art used on these blocks was mine but I did use some images from clker clip art. Those emotional Lego heads were too cute and my kids loved them.

Suggestions, requests, questions, corrections, or comments?

Use our worksheets or activities?

Just cut out around the outside edges of them on the thick line.

Fold on the lines to form the blocks.

Tape closed. If your house is like mine and you can’t find tape, glue on the folded tabs would work or washi tape.

Also be sure to check out our FREE printables section where we share over 200 sets of printable worksheets, activities, and games!
